An exceptional pair of carved 19th century free standing consoles with rouge royale marble tops, finished in silver gilt. Each has a velvet lined drawer in the frieze and a lower stretcher shelf . The crisp carving throughout is typical of late 19th century patterns. Note the labels on the underside of each marble; Wm. Baumgarten was an important interior decorator in NYC who was head of Herter Brothers in 1881 and in 1891 went on his own to have a very successful career. He worked for the Vanderbilts and many other notables of the beaux-arts era. The name “Sperry” written in pencil on the surface was likely the client.
